Autumn is the best exterior painting season in Middle Tennessee. Humidity drops, the surface is no longer too hot to hold paint, and the sun is off the walls sooner. It is also the season with the shortest usable window, because what ends it is the overnight low rather than the afternoon high.
The number that matters is the night, not the day
Most exterior latex paints specify a minimum application temperature, commonly 50°F, and the specification means the surface must stay above it for a period after application rather than just at the moment of the brush stroke. Curing continues for hours after the film looks dry.
A Nashville October day that reaches 68°F and drops to 41°F overnight fails that requirement even though the afternoon looked ideal. The paint film stops coalescing, and the result is poor adhesion, a chalky surface and colour that does not match between coats.
Dew point is the other half of it
A cool surface below the dew point collects moisture, and paint applied onto or immediately before that happens will not bond. In autumn the dew forms early, and a north-facing wall in shade can be wet by four in the afternoon while the south wall is dry.
The practical rule is to keep the surface at least five degrees above the dew point, stop early enough that the film has hours of dry conditions before evening, and follow the sun around the house so you are never painting a surface about to go into shade.

- Stop mid-afternoon rather than working until dusk
- Follow the sun and paint walls after they have warmed
- Do not paint a surface that has dew or has just been washed
- Allow longer between coats than the can suggests in cool weather
Low-temperature paints and what they change
Several manufacturers make exterior products rated down to 35°F, and they genuinely extend the season by a few weeks. They are formulated to keep coalescing at lower temperatures rather than to be immune to weather.
They do not change the dew point problem, they do not tolerate frost on the surface, and they still need the temperature to hold above the rating overnight. They buy time in early November rather than making December viable.
What to do with the rest of the season
The preparation is the part of an exterior job that decides how long it lasts, and much of it can be done in weather that is too cold to paint. Scraping, sanding, caulking within its own temperature rating, replacing rotten trim and washing the house are all autumn work.
It is also the sensible time to book. Painters in Middle Tennessee are booked solid from April through the first cool weeks, and the crews with the best reputations fill their spring calendar over the winter. A quote in November is a better spring slot than a quote in March.
